From the Introduction & First Chapter

Introduction

3rd Shift Entrepreneur by Todd Connor. Build your dream job while keeping your day job. Do you dread your morning alarm and wish your work gave you more energy and purpose? Matt Carney understands that feeling.

He is a successful military veteran and business management strategist who is close to making partner. From the outside, his career seems to be going well. But Matt feels unfulfilled. He wants more purpose, inspiration, and energy in his life.

A chance encounter with a rideshare driver named Kenneth begins to change his perspective. Kenneth is not simply driving for extra money. He uses the job to research customers for a business idea he wants to pursue. Kenneth invites Matt to meet a group called the 3rd Shift Entrepreneurs.

Its members are building businesses while continuing to work their regular jobs. They are united by a desire to serve people through something unique and personal. Their stories reveal a different path into entrepreneurship. You do not need to quit your job before pursuing an idea.

You can begin by paying attention to what you cannot stop thinking about.

explore your passions

Explore Your Passions. Matt receives an unusual homework assignment. He must list the things he cannot stop thinking about and deliberately disrupt his normal routine. The exercise helps him recognize what genuinely interests him.

It also challenges an assumption that has been holding him back. His main job does not necessarily stand in the way of a side business. In some cases, it can help him build one. Yissel demonstrates how this can work.

She wants to become a coffee roaster. Her night job at a coffee shop gives her access to a roasting facility. She uses that opportunity to improve her production methods. She can also test different blends with real customers and learn from their reactions.

Kenneth follows the same principle in a different way. His rideshare work gives him direct access to potential customers. He talks with passengers and gathers information for the retreat business he hopes to create. Neither entrepreneur treats a current job as wasted time.

Instead, they use their circumstances as a practical learning environment. This is the value of approaching entrepreneurship with an intern's mindset. You observe, you experiment, you learn from people already around you, and you use available resources before investing heavily in something new. Matt begins his own exploration by examining his list of recurring interests.

The outdoors stands out immediately. He loves adventure sports and spending time outside, but passion alone does not tell him what business to build. Yissel encourages him to combine those interests with skills he already possesses. Matt understands management consulting.

He knows how to help organizations solve business problems. Instead of abandoning that expertise, he can redirect it toward an industry he genuinely cares about. He begins considering clients in the outdoor industry. His existing career can become a bridge to something more meaningful.
