Mackey and Whole Foods Market Board
Mackey and Whole Foods Market Board. In the late 2000s, Mackey arrived in Florida to meet the Whole Foods Market Board of Directors. They were discussing his future as CEO, and the news was not good. According to the board, Mackey's work had been unsatisfactory.
For example, Mackey tried to create an online initiative for Whole Foods, called Whole People. Calm, it aimed to sell healthy food, supplements, books, and clothing. Unfortunately, it was a bust, and the board had had enough. After the meeting, Mackey felt panic-stricken, wondering if he was about to lose everything he had worked for.
Mackey might have felt this was the end, but in fact, it was just the beginning. Conscious leadership begins with personal transformation. Mackey wandered into local Whole Foods stores in Florida, which he often did when traveling. He saw aisles of healthy, natural food and happy employees chatting with customers.
This realization showed him that making people happy and inspiring healthy eating was what Whole Foods was all about. It was why he co-founded the company, and in that moment, he reconnected to his purpose. This was his why for leading a business driven by more than just money. When Mackey met the board again, he proved that he was the person to lead Whole Foods.
He just about pulled it off and kept his job. However, he knew he could not remain the same leader if he wanted to guide the company's future. To guide Whole Foods into a bright future, he had to evolve as a conscious leader. That meant embarking on an intentional journey of personal development.
In the next chapters, we will look at the steps you can take to become a conscious leader. This includes the mindset and qualities to cultivate. But first, let us look at business in society and how capitalism can be a force for good.
