From the Introduction & First Chapter

Introduction

Smart Leadership by Mark Miller. Four deliberate choices help leaders escape stagnation, increase their capacity, discover opportunities, and create a better future. Have you ever worked harder and harder, only to feel as though you were sinking deeper into quicksand? Many leaders face growing demands, constant interruptions, endless meetings, and increasing complexity.

They cope by learning to survive inside the quicksand, rather than finding a way out. Mark Miller argues that leadership improves when you recognize that your choices still give you agency. The first step is identifying what prevents you from having the impact you want. It might be fatigue, complacency, constant interruptions, overwhelming communication, or circumstances beyond your control.

Once you identify your personal quicksand, you can begin choosing a different response. Smart Leadership focuses on four choices that can multiply your impact. They are confronting reality, growing capacity, fueling curiosity, and creating change. Each choice matters individually, but together they provide a practical path toward stronger leadership.

confront reality and choose your future

Confront Reality and Choose Your Future. Before leaders can create a better future, they need an accurate picture of the present. Max DePree described defining reality as the first responsibility of a leader. Yet confronting reality can be uncomfortable.

Fear of failure, denial, arrogance, limited thinking, or simple busyness can prevent leaders from seeing clearly. Miller recommends beginning by defining your personal universe. Start with your leadership and ask how effectively you are leading. Consider whether blind spots may be affecting your judgment.

Then examine your team and leadership team. Ask whether people are performing exceptionally or merely well enough. Next, consider the organization itself. Is it performing close to its potential?

Are your strategies producing the results you expected? Your reality also includes life beyond organizational performance. Consider whether your current way of living is sustainable. Think about your participation at work, at home, and in your community.

Examine your relationships and notice which ones provide energy or drain it. Review your financial situation and whether you have prepared adequately for the future. Consider your health, including sleep, exercise, and diet. If spirituality matters to you, examine that part of your life as well.

Then consider your contribution to the community and the legacy you hope to leave. This reality inventory establishes your starting point. But confronting reality is not something you complete once. Leaders must repeatedly compare current reality with the future they want to create.

The differences reveal gaps that require attention. Once those gaps become visible, you can begin planning how to close them. Do not rely entirely on your own perspective. Other people can challenge assumptions and identify biases you cannot see.

A consultant, mentor, or professional coach can provide useful outside perspective. The essential task is to establish what is true today. Then define what you want to become true and begin moving toward it.
