The fastest ever dropping global financial market baffled experts. So what exactly happened on that chaotic day? At 1. 41pm, the S &P 500 dropped 5%.
This index tracks 500 of the biggest American firms. The Dow Jones index tumbled along with it. It fell more in five minutes than in its history. Individual shares plunged too.
The stock charts looked like sheer cliff faces. All across the world, the financial markets went into panic mode. High-frequency trading algorithms were designed to manage risks. When volatility surged, these programs instantly withdrew their orders.
Suddenly, there was no one willing to buy stocks. This lack of liquidity caused prices to plummet further. Then, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange stopped all trading. An automatic stock logic function kicked in for 5 seconds.
