Introduction
How to Find Fulfilling Work by Roman Krznaric Find purposeful, meaningful work rich with freedom and flow. Perhaps you are already familiar with this scenario. You have finally finished college, waiting forever to get this far. All you want is to start working and earn money.
You want to enjoy some free time, stolen by late hours of study. You plan to put it toward pursuing your beloved hobbies. But then what happens in our lives? Day after day, you get stuck at work, feeling unimportant and bored.
Each spare moment finds you dreaming yourself away to a tropical island. There is no time for leisure or fun. You expect the gray hairs to start sprouting apace. Finding fulfilling work is not easy at all.
Today, it is not only about providing for yourself and your family. Work is much more than that for us. In these chapters, the author defines fulfilling work. More importantly, he introduces several steps you can take to achieve it.
expectations about work
Expectations about work. We are dissatisfied when our expectations about work are not met. Did you know that at least 50% of Western workers are unhappy with their jobs? A survey across Europe suggests 60% would choose a different career path.
But what makes them so unhappy? The dissatisfaction we feel at work often stems from higher expectations. Modern workers do not just pursue decent pay. They expect their job to give their life meaning.
However, this was not always the case. People used to be happy with a roof over their heads and food on the table. Now, most of us in the Western world are relatively affluent. We can meet our basic needs and are looking for more than just good pay.
You would probably reach the end of your tether toiling away on an assembly line. Your grandparents were probably fine with it and even grateful to pay their bills. Nowadays, we are after a feeling of purpose. We want to pursue our personal passions, values, and talents.
Basically, we want our job to be fulfilling. What then should we do to fix it? Well, you can either lower your expectations. Supporters of this approach say work has always been tedious, never a joy.
Therefore, we should lower our expectations and look for fulfillment outside of work. Or you can join those who think finding fulfilling work is possible, though challenging. The latter approach encourages you to pursue your dreams. Do not regret that you never tried to free yourself from your unfulfilling job.
It is fairly obvious that we will now proceed with the latter strategy. Before we see what makes a career fulfilling, let us understand why meaningful work is difficult to find.
