Introduction

The Joy in Business by Joy J. Baldridge This book offers practical tools for finding positivity and profit in your daily work life. Do you ever feel like your emotions are a revolving door, constantly shifting between frustration and joy? Imagine four distinct houses, each representing a primary emotion: sadness, anger, gladness, and fear.

We all move between these houses daily, but often find ourselves dwelling in the less desirable ones. The good news is that you can choose to move into the house of gladness. This requires paying your R. E.

N. T. : rest, exercise, nutrition, and thoughts.

moving into the house of gladness

Moving into the House of Gladness. You can change the emotional state toward which you tend to gravitate. Conceptual tools come in many forms, but few pack as much of a punch as metaphor. We begin with one such metaphor, a simple yet powerful way to reconceptualize emotions.

Imagine four houses. Each house corresponds to one of four primary emotions: sadness, anger, gladness, and fear. In each house, you'll find a wide range of variations. Sadness, sorrow, despair, and devastation are in the house of sad.

Annoyance, rage, and fury are in the house of mad. Contentment, happiness, and elation are in the house of glad. Nervousness, panic, and terror are in the house of scared. From day to day, we tend to move from one house to the next.

For example, imagine losing a family heirloom. You might start in the house of sad, lamenting your loss. Then you might move into the house of mad, angry at the person who lost it. Despite all this moving around, one house tends to be our primary residence.

If you wake with anxiety every day, you might live in the house of scared. Now, here's the bad news. Most of us tend to live in the houses of sad, mad, scared. We're more like occasional visitors to the house of glad.

But here's the good news. If you dwell too much in a negative house, there's a simple solution: move out of it. Of course, that's easier said than done. In the next chapter, we'll look at practical steps that can help you move into the house of glad.

For now, the point of the metaphor is realizing that moving is possible. If you feel sad, mad, or scared most of the time, it's not permanent. It's a temporary dwelling place you can leave behind. The house of glad awaits you.
