These include your smartphone and email, even your thoughts about your next vacation can distract you. When your attention becomes scattered by these distractions, you impair your ability to do your work on time.
You also impair your ability to do it well. Author Daniel Goleman goes beyond a narrow definition of focus. He presents a guidebook for living a focused life. According to him, we can gain a richer, fuller existence.
This comes from paying attention to ourselves and to others. We must also consider larger contexts, including our planet and the future. Drawing from countless real life examples, this book provides many ways to enhance your attention. These include practicing mindfulness, positive thinking, and engaging in focused preparation.
In this summary, you will learn letting your mind wander can lead you to great insights. However, it can also hinder you in accomplishing your goals. You will find out why great leadership is not only about keeping your eyes on the prize. It also requires self-awareness and empathy.
You will discover how to train your willpower like a muscle. You will also learn that doing what you love and seeing it through requires much less effort. Finally, you will learn why a positive attitude makes a massive difference. This is especially true when you are stressed and cannot think straight.
Selective Attention and Distraction
Selective Attention and Distraction. Attention is the key to high performance in a world of endless distractions. Whenever you do check your email or phone for a while, do you fight a remarkably strong urge to drop everything and take a peek? If you give in to the urge, do you feel unsatisfied?
Are there no new messages waiting for you? We live in highly distracting times. The constant urge to respond to overwhelming information and stimuli leads us to continuous partial attention. In this state, we leap carelessly from one thing to another.
We go from our phones to email to social media, losing our ability to select what we pay attention to. However, it is possible for us to focus. This is true even when surrounded by activity and stimuli. What we need is strong selective attention.
The stronger our ability to select what we focus on, the better we are at ignoring potential distractions. For example, journalists in an open plan office at the New York Times manage to focus on their work. They meet deadlines despite noise and other distractions. None of these journalists ever demand quiet to concentrate better.
But not everyone's selective attention is as strong. Most of us tend to daydream while at work or distract ourselves with other time activities. For that reason, it is crucial to increase our selective attention to ignore external distractions and accomplish our tasks. However, the distractions that engulf us do more than waste our time.
They also reduce our productivity and diminish our ability to immerse ourselves in a subject. This reduces our chances of reaching a state of flow, hindering learning and discovering new things. In fact, this issue is so prominent. Internet addiction among young people has become a growing health concern in many Asian countries.
So, if we develop our ability to ignore distractions and focus well, we can increase our performance. We can also enable ourselves to have more profound reflections and deeper insights.
