millennials and the economy
Millennials and the economy. Millennials are a generation often stereotyped. They are addicted to Instagram.
They love queuing for croissants. Such stereotypes, though, are far too narrow. They do not apply to all millennials. This generation was born late 1970s.
It extends to the mid-1990s. It is the largest and most diverse. This is true in all of history. Unfortunately, most millennials have one thing in common.
This is especially true in the U . S. They face unique challenges on the road. They seek to achieve financial success.
Previous generations, since the 1950s, they enjoyed economic stability. This lasted most of their lives. As a result, they had an uncomplicated path. This led to financial success.
Let us call this the success sequence. It starts with a steady life-long job. Then comes purchasing property. Acquiring assets is next.
Finally, they retire with a healthy nest egg. In the wake of the 2008 global recession, however, the economic landscape changed. The job market became volatile. Millennials were entering the workforce.
A steady job became hard to find. This was the first step in the sequence. Post-recession, many millennials scrape by. The cost of living continues to rise.
Wage growth is sluggish at the same time. Salaries do not keep pace with inflation. Housing prices are through the roof. Millennials struggle to buy property.
Securing a decent retirement is hard. 72% of millennials have. They have less than $10,000 saved. It is clear millennials face obstacles.
They seek financial security. Many millennials lack knowledge and confidence. They need this to overcome obstacles. A 2014 study surveyed millennials.
It was by George Washington School of Business. Over 5,500 Americans were included. They were between 23 and 35. 76% were financially illiterate.
They were unfamiliar with basic concepts. These were personal finance concepts. No wonder millennials feel stressed. A 2015 Gallup study shows.
70% report financial stress. The conventional success sequence is no longer applicable. This does not mean millennials cannot. They can achieve financial success.
This will be on their own terms.
