When the Rhodes Scholarship Committee asked Stacey Abrams about her future, she froze. As a recent Spelman College graduate, she had almost skipped applying altogether. No black woman had ever secured the Mississippi nomination for this award.

She feared losing a competition she felt destined to fail. Yet the dean of her college urged her to apply anyway. The dean pointed out that passing the state level meant she could win nationally. Abrams took the leap and advanced to the national finals.
