From the Introduction & First Chapter

Introduction

Welcome to Management by Ryan Hawk. Great leadership is about developing yourself and prioritizing your team's growth above your own. Are you ready to transition from top performer to excellent leader? Many individuals find this shift challenging.

It requires a completely different skill set. Luckily, these skills are learnable. This summary will reveal what great leadership looks like. You will discover actionable advice to develop the necessary mindset and qualities.

learning to lead yourself

Learning to Lead Yourself. It's your first day in your new management position. You are still marveling at having your own four walls. Then, a knock at your door.

It's Sarah, your subordinate and former peer. She walks in visibly upset. Without warning, she blurts out, My husband cheated on me. Your first thoughts race.

Why is she telling me this? What do Sarah's marital woes have to do with me? The key message is, being a great manager has nothing to do with your past job performance. When the author faced a heartbroken teammate, he realized how little he understood about leadership.

Being qualified for a management role does not mean you are equipped to perform it. This is a well known management problem called the Peter Principle. It states that people climb the ranks until they reach incompetence. In corporations, employees get promoted until they reach a position.

The skills that made them successful are no longer enough. Most organizations poorly prepare first time managers. This common ceiling prevents growth. No matter how amazing you were in your previous role, becoming the boss demands new skills.

As a leader, you must drive yourself and your team to success. This includes supporting team members whose personal lives affect their work. The author did not acquire these skills overnight. But there are practical tools you can embrace.

In the following chapters, you will learn how to motivate people to greatness. Before helping others grow, however, you must learn to lead yourself.
