alpha leaders are charismatic, dedicated monarchs
Alpha Leaders are charismatic, dedicated monarchs. It is a hot summer night in August 2015. 2,000 excited audience members are taking their seats in Salzburg.
They are watching Verdi's Il Trovatore as part of Salzburg's annual opera festival. One of the best stalls has been reserved for Peter Brabeck-Letmathe. He is chairman of the world's largest food company, Nestlé. Nestlé has sponsored the festival, and Brabeck-Letmathe is there as the company's representative.
His presence captures people's attention. He captivates them almost as much as any famous tenor. Brabeck-Letmathe is an Alpha Leader. He is charming, confident, and accustomed to commanding attention.
His strong personality helped him lead a company with annual sales worth 60 billion pounds. You will always know when you are in the presence of Alpha Leaders. Like true monarchs, they conduct themselves as if they are the most important people in the room. They can be inspiring, but they can also be intimidating.
Staff hang on every syllable they utter. They worry about pleasing them. Alphas firmly believe in themselves and rule accordingly. This style may seem egotistical, but Alphas need that confidence because they often lead enormous multinational companies.
There is simply no time for constant second-guessing or ruling by consensus. Alphas are also future-focused. They know it takes time to build a kingdom. They are not afraid to wait.
This willingness to think long-term leads them to invest heavily in research and development. Under Brabeck-Letmathe's leadership, Nestlé spent 25 years developing Nespresso. Today, it is a staple of homes and offices. Alphas are committed to the long game.
They are also intensely competitive. This means they often stay with one business for decades. Think about Brabeck-Letmathe again. By 2015, he had been with the company for nearly 50 years.
Nestlé had become his life's work, but the age of the Alpha is changing. As globalization fades, vast business empires become less attractive. At the same time, inclusivity matters more. Boards increasingly question autocratic leadership styles.
Employees and stakeholders expect to have a voice. If you are an Alpha and want to continue leading, you need to loosen your grip, become more collaborative, delegate more responsibility, listen to consumers, employees, and stakeholders. Keep the Alpha's confidence and long-term vision, but combine them with a greater willingness to listen. Do that, and you may maintain your place on the throne.
