For Chad Robichox, that question became more than an idea. It became a mission to save one friend that ultimately helped save thousands.
a friendship forged in war
a friendship forged in war. Every story has a hero. This one has many. After the September 11th attacks, the United States went to war to oust the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Chad Robichox was a force recon Marine working special operations in the war-torn country. Aziz was a cheerful 25-year-old father who was already teaching English to his countrymen. A U. S.
Marine recruited him as an interpreter. During his training, Aziz quickly stood out. He soon went on to work with Chad and his team. Over the years, the two men formed a strong friendship.
Aziz's children even called Chad uncle. One day, Chad joined Aziz and his family for dinner. They watched the U. S.
election to see whether George W. Bush would win another term. Chad wondered why an American election mattered so much to Aziz. So he asked.
Aziz responded by taking Chad to an abandoned building with a pool built into the ground. The pool was empty and Aziz climbed inside. Chad followed. Aziz pointed toward the wall at the deep end.
There were stains and bullet holes at head level for someone kneeling. Chad immediately understood that executions had taken place there. Then Aziz pointed out another row of bullet holes. These were at the height of small children.
Chad felt sick. This is why Aziz told him. Many Afghans remembered when their country had experienced a brief period of greater freedom. The 1970s had been especially liberating for women.
Then war came. Out of the conflict rose an ultra conservative Mujahidin element called the Taliban. After September 11th, many Afghan citizens were prepared to risk their lives to stop the Taliban. They wanted to protect their daughters from being sold off.
They wanted to prevent their sons from being sent to their deaths. People like Aziz looked to the United States for salvation. Chad carried the memory of that pool into every operation. It reminded him what was at stake for families like Aziz's.
They were heroes too.
