tribes in the workplace

Tribes in the Workplace Have you ever wondered why human beings naturally gravitate toward forming tight-knit groups everywhere they go? Throughout history, people have formed groups to survive and accomplish things they could never achieve alone. The modern workplace is no exception to this timeless pattern of human behavior. Large projects and new product launches require deep collaboration among many individuals.

We instinctively form tribes to achieve shared goals and secure our collective future. A tribe is the fundamental social structure in which everyday people operate. Tribes typically consist of 20 to 150 people working toward common aims. A larger company is essentially a big tribe made up of many smaller tribes.

Social interaction between members is essential for the health of the entire group. You would at least say hello to someone who belongs to your specific tribe. Every tribe also contains people who hold very different roles. Those diverse roles serve different practical purposes within the greater group.

A tribe where everyone thinks and works identically is unlikely to succeed. Members work individually on tasks, but they still move toward common goals. Consider the diverse roles found within a small and bustling town. A town needs a police officer, a preacher, and a librarian.

Their roles differ, but each contributes to the daily functioning of the community. Workplace tribes operate in much the same way as any small town. Forming tribes is crucial whenever people attempt something large and complicated. No one could build ancient cathedrals or survive the ice age alone.

Tribes remain just as important for accomplishing modern goals today. Releasing a new medicine or publishing a book requires many people working together. Tribes exist throughout the workplace because humans naturally organize themselves this way. Understanding how those workplace tribes function is therefore essential for organizational success.
