Introduction
The Courage to Be Free by Ron DeSantis Ron DeSantis presents Florida as a model of conservative government built around freedom, institutional resistance, and decisive political leadership. Political principles are easy to announce during campaigns. Governing is harder because leaders must choose which principles justify conflict and political risk. For DeSantis, leadership means using lawful authority decisively and accepting responsibility for the consequences.
The Courage to Be Free explains how he developed this philosophy and applied it while governing Florida. His central argument is that freedom survives only when leaders are willing to defend principles through concrete action.
from legislator to governor
From Legislator to Governor. Ron DeSantis became governor of Florida after narrowly winning the election in November 2018. The next morning, he took his usual neighborhood run and noticed security agents following him. Their presence made the responsibilities of his new office suddenly tangible.
DeSantis had previously spent five years representing Florida in Congress. There, he was one legislator among many and often found meaningful policy change difficult. The governorship offered a different kind of power. He could establish priorities, direct executive agencies, and accept clear responsibility for outcomes.
DeSantis had not entered politics with a powerful organization or broad public recognition. Before reaching Congress, he was relatively unknown and relied heavily on persistent door knocking. By 2018, he believed executive leadership offered greater opportunities to produce lasting change. He also understood that a governor operates within a limited window.
Florida governors could serve no more than two consecutive four-year terms. His priorities included immigration enforcement, public safety, education, health care, and opposition to progressive cultural policies. But having priorities was not enough. DeSantis believed leaders must advance their agenda instead of spending their time reacting defensively to criticism.
His governing philosophy therefore emphasized taking the initiative. Conflict was acceptable when he believed an important principle was at stake. That approach became especially visible in education. DeSantis opposed critical race theory and teachings he believed defined America primarily through racial oppression.
He supported legislation known as the Stop W. O. K. E.
Act. The measure reflected his broader campaign against ideas he regarded as ideological indoctrination. Critics viewed the approach as divisive and politically aggressive. DeSantis described it instead as a defense of freedom, parental authority, and common sense.
His willingness to accept confrontation would soon face a much larger test.
