From the Introduction & First Chapter

Introduction

Imperfect Courage by Jessica Honegger Purpose grows when ordinary people move beyond comfort, face fear, embrace vulnerability, and courageously serve others. Fear often sounds reasonable because it promises safety. It warns against failure, embarrassment, rejection, and uncertainty. Yet safety can quietly separate your present life from a more meaningful one.

Jessica Honegger discovered this while pursuing international adoption during a financial crisis. She needed money and knew Ugandan artisans who needed customers. Connecting those needs became the unexpected beginning of Noonday Collection. Her story reveals that courage does not require confidence before action.

It requires moving while fear remains present. This imperfect courage can help us speak, connect, serve, and build more purposeful lives.

courage can begin before confidence

Courage Can Begin Before Confidence. Honegger never planned to build an international jewelry business. Her original dream was adopting a child from Africa. Years earlier, she had held an orphaned baby during a visit there.

The experience convinced her that adoption belonged in her family story. International adoption was expensive, and financial trouble soon threatened that dream. Honegger and her husband earned money by refurbishing properties. When the housing market collapsed, their income disappeared.

She suddenly needed another way to fund the adoption. Then she remembered friends in Uganda who knew two struggling artisans. Jalia and Daniel Matovu made beautiful crafts but lacked access to customers paying fair prices. Honegger decided to bring their work to people she knew in Austin.

She organized a sale inside her home. She included the Ugandan products alongside clothes from her own closet. The plan frightened her. She worried nobody would come.

She also feared friends might judge what she was attempting. Still, she invited them. They came because they cared about her adoption journey. They also responded to products connecting style with human stories and economic opportunity.

Within an hour, almost everything had sold. Honegger realized the sale could become more than an emergency fundraiser. She organized another sale, then another. She requested more products from Uganda and sent money back to the Matovus.

She had no formal business expertise. Instead, she relied on determination, relationships, practical judgment, and willingness to learn. Those qualities gradually shaped a real company. Noonday eventually supported thousands of artisans and created opportunities for women selling products in the United States.

The business also helped Honegger achieve her original dream. The following year, her family welcomed Jack, an orphan from Rwanda, into their home. Her path began without certainty. It began because she acted before feeling fully prepared.
